-In Eatonville, Zora never felt inferior, she saw black achievement all around her.


-Zora had a happy childhood, her only problems seemed to arise from clashes with her preacher-father

-Zora's mother died when she was only 13 years old, in 1904, which essentially ended her childhood

-Zora's father remarried quickly, to a woman Zora was not fond of

-Zora was beautiful, she always lived her life ten years younger than she was. She had to act young in order to finish her schooling that had been put off by joining the "Gilbert and Sullivan" traveling troupe.

-She graduated from Barnard College in 1928 and began writing

-In 1937 Hurston published her greatest known novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. The novel along with her behavior was criticized in this time due to her refusal to adjust to gender conventions

-Zora never received the money she deserved, and died relatively poor on January 28, 1960 (age 69)
